Preface

Metaphor and metonymy are still of scientific and public concern. Since the first issue of metaphorik.de appeared in December 2001, we registered more than 50.000 page views and an impressive number of mails reached us from all over the world. Many of them were of special scientific interest, but a significant part of them contained questions concerning the role of metaphor and metonymy in everyday life - not to forget the many questions asked by students. Concerning the scientific realm of ongoing linguistic research and literary criticism a remarkable interdisciplinary trend is still going on trying to overcome disciplinary boundaries and opening the discussion about metaphor and metonymy to other disciplines. These first steps towards a wider discussion are complemented by an ‘inner-disciplinary’ concentration on theoretical research on the one hand and empirical studies on the other hand.

Due to this development, we are glad to present in the second issue of metaphorik.de a number of articles which depict the diversity of ongoing research in metaphor and metonymy. Stephanie Gomolla analyses the architecture of texts and architectural metaphors in the works of Michel Butor while Olaf Jäkel gives deep insight into the main paradigms of the so-called Cognitive Theory of Metaphor investigating the role of metaphor in religious texts. The paper of Anke Michels analyses the use of metaphor during the 1998 Football World Cup in France and the 2000 UEFA European Championship in Belgium and the Netherlands. She takes a close look at the metaphorics in television commentaries, a somehow neglected field of investigation. Irene Mittelberg offers a study about the interrelation of iconography and metaphor comparing images of grammar during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance with the metaphors used to explain the abstract notion of grammar in the commentaries. Last but not least, Brigitte Nerlich, Craig A. Hamilton and Victoria Rowe shed light on the fact that metaphor plays an essential role in conceptualising epidemics, like in the news coverage during the Foot and Mouth Disease in England in 2001. The reviews by Claudia Polzin-Haumann and Nikola Roßbach appreciate new theoretical attempts in linguistics and literary criticism.

We hope the second issue of metaphorik.de provokes and promotes a lively and interdisciplinary discussion about theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of metaphor and metonymy. May metaphorik.de serve as a forum of dialogue that respects and cares about scientific diversity.
