Preface

We are happy to announce that the third volume of metaphorik.de is now available online – the wide and increasing positive feedback to our online forum concerning the theoretical as well as the practical aspects of metaphor are an incentive to keep the journal and the forum ‘alive’ and to enlarge and improve its features.

The current volume contains five papers that – more or less – concentrate on practical aspects of metaphor. This means that the investigation of empirical material will on the one hand shed light on the role of metaphor in different domains of discourse, and on the other hand these results will definitely have repercussions on the theoretical framework of metaphor and metonymy.

Metaphor is an essential ingredient in the science of wine. The first paper, offered by Loredana Amoraritei, analyses French texts showing that the domain of enology is culturally shaped by different body-metaphors: wine and the consumption or pleasure of it are in fact deeply influenced and structured by metaphor. Martin Döring and Dietmar Osthus investigate the French news coverage during the FIFA World Championship of football in France 1998. They analyse the use of the same conceptual metaphors and show how different political points of view could only be grasped via a serious inquiry of the co- and context in which these metaphors appear. On a theoretical level their paper offers an insight into the relation between the textual and conceptual levels of metaphor. The article by Silke Jansen sheds light on the role of Anglo-American metaphors for the conceptualization of the internet and their constitutive role for the Spanish and French internet-terminology in use. His main interest concerns the ‘in-between’: How is the cognitive empty space and lack of internet terminology influenced and structured by translations and borrowings taken from the Anglo-American domains of discourse? Last but not least, Dörte Ohlhoff offers a valuable insight how almost conventional metaphors create ideological patterns of biology in German schoolbooks. They generate images of a supposed save and scientific knowledge – a knowledge that is in fact only as save as its metaphors are.

In our new category ‘project presentations’ Carina Eilts and Birte Lönneker give insight into the Hamburg Metaphor Database, a search engine for the examination of occurrences for the almost current conceptual metaphors in the French and German news discourse. A review written by Dietmar Osthus of a study about cannibalism as theme and as metaphor can be found at the end of this volume.

All papers are – as in the recent volumes – available in the html- and in the pdf-format. We hope that this volume will cause a stimulating and open discussion concerning metaphor and metonymy.
