Vorwort 10/2006

Redaktion

Mohamed Shokr wiederum analysiert die Verwendung des metaphorischen Konzepts DAS LEBEN IST EINE REISE (LIFE IS A JOURNEY) im Koran.

The focus of metaphorik.de is the investigation of the varying forms and functions of metaphor and metonymy, and their impact on everyday life. This ubiquity of metaphor and metonymy does not, however, explain the relevance per se of research on metaphor in the fields of linguistics, cultural studies and the study of literature. It is rather the multiplicity of occurrences and the existing diversity of metaphor and metonymy in communication, literature and culture that renders both tropes as important research objects of an interdisciplinary research enterprise, to which metaphorik.de has always been devoted.

We are happy to announce the publication of the 10th issue of metaphorik.de and we think that this is an occasion for a short survey of the work done during the last five years: 55 articles and 25 reviews appeared in metaphorik.de since December 2001. Most of the articles were written in English, German and French by colleagues from 16 different countries on four continents and stemming from a variety of disciplines. This clearly shows, in our opinion, the interest in, and relevance of, the previously mentioned interdisciplinary research enterprise on metaphor and metonymy which we tried to stimulate and which is, in turn, sustained by the continuous feedback we receive.

The present issue puts an emphasis on two aspects of metaphor which recently gained more and more interest: First, the reciprocity of metaphor and media and second, the specificity of metaphor in certain cultural contexts or in inherent in overarching cultural contexts. Thus, Valadimir Beliakov investigates the use of metaphor in Russian mass media. His article sheds light on how metaphors conceptualise the current political and social situation in Russia while Ansgar Thiele provides insight into the theoretical discussion on metaphor in the area of movie studies. He raises the important question whether metaphor is a useful analytical category for a visual medium. Katja Hachenberg’s detailed review of Eva Gehring’s work refers to the close connection between metaphor and media: The prevailing metaphors used to conceptualise the internet could be summed up under the heading of space metaphors. Fernando Balbachan’s discussion paper analyses the interaction between metaphor, morphology, syntax and lexicon according to the Spanish metaphorical expression matar el tiempo. Two papers investigate the cultural and intercultural dimensions of metaphor: Gill Philip explores the connotative meanings of colour metaphors in a comparative study on the Italian and English language while Mohamed Shokr examines the metaphorical concept LIFE IS A JOURNEY in the Qur'an – a valuable insight into cultural similarities in times of the so-called Clash of Civilisations.

Five years metaphorik.de: This has been a fascinating and stimulating time for us and we are looking forward to the future prospect of publishing, maintaining and initiating the scientific discussion around metaphor and metonymy.

We would like to thank our readership very much for their continuous interest and commitment.

Killing Time: Metaphors and Their Implications in LexiconandGrammar

from the tender crib to the mourning grave
(Francisco de Quevedo y Villegas, Metaphysical Poems)

1

Metaphors have recently acquired a fairly vindicated relevance in the field of linguistics, not as mere figures of speech but as important semantic processes pertinent to both psycholinguistic and lexicology. Metaphors in the broad sense may be viewed as a means of categorizing our world, through broad-range phenomena such as metaphors in the strict sense, metonymy, and the so called “metaphtonymy” (Goossens 1990). From the point of view of lexical productive processes in word and phrase formations, their role as meaning extension in the lexicon is incontrovertible. The latter raises the question about the very status of metaphors inside the lexicon. In order to discuss that issue, this paper will closely analyze from a cross-linguistic point of view the interaction of metaphors with morphology and syntax, illustrating the discussion with Dutch examples (Dirven 1985). In particular, we will argue around the problematic case of the metaphorical use of Spanish “matar el tiempo” (lit. killing time). It is intended to demonstrate how this expression, even implying both a selectional constraint violation and a syntactic anomaly (the absence of the preposition ‘a’), is strictly a “dead” metaphor and involves a lexicalization entry at the level of the lexicon. Therefore, in spite of our initial intuition, we will claim that there is no such interaction with respect to syntax level in this case.

31

In this article, we are interested in the image of Russian reality such as it appears through the metaphors used by the Russian media. The main objective of our work consists in listing and analyzing the metaphorical expressions which reflect the specificities of twenty-first-century Russia and highlight in a coherent way the conceptualization of reality by a Russian-speaking community. Our study reveals some tendencies related to the use of the metaphors in the Russian media. The quantitative analysis of the corpus revealed the prevalence of the metaphors concerned in relation with certain referential categories. As for the qualitative analysis, it enabled us to bring some typical conceptual metaphors to the fore and to clarify the axiological character of metaphors.

Connotative Meaning in English and Italian Colour-Word Metaphor

Abstract

Colour words are loaded with attributive, connotative meanings, many of which are realised in conventional linguistic expressions such as to feel blue, to be in the pink, and to see red. The use of such phrases on an everyday basis reinforces the currency of the connotative meanings which they assume in particular cultural and linguistic settings, and the phrases themselves are often cited as evidence of the existence of colours’ connotative meanings. But how do the colour words in conventional linguistic expressions relate to the multitude of symbolic meanings that colours (in general) are said to represent? Based on data extracted from general reference corpora as well as traditional reference works, this article examines the use of colour-word metaphors in English and Italian. It pays particular attention to the ways in which colour words take on connotative meanings, how the meanings are fixed linguistically, and similarities and differences across the two languages under examination.

Farbbezeichnungen enthalten viele attributive und konnotative Bedeutungen, wobei viele von ihnen in umgangssprachlichen Ausdrücken vorkommen, wie z.B. to feel blue, to be in the pink und to see red.

The Metaphorical Concept "Life is a Journey" in the Qur'an: a Cognitive-semantic Analysis

Abstract

This paper demonstrates how the conceptual metaphor “life is a journey” pervades the Qur’an and how within the same scope we can find some related metaphors, such as “the Straight Way”, “the way of Hell” and “Companions of the Fire”, among others. The metaphor “life is a journey” takes as a source domain the concept “journey” and as a target domain the concept “life”. The other related metaphors are an extension of that metaphor. The instances of the “journey” metaphor with its underlying “path” schema will be analyzed using the Cognitive Theory of Metaphor as created by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and developed later by Lakoff and Turner (1989), and others, e.g. Wreth (1994, 1999). The application of the Cognitive Theory of Metaphor will reveal how this metaphor is used creatively, as it is built on dichotomy or contrast, and how it is widened to cover a broader aspect of life, i.e., life after physical death (the afterlife/hereafter). Meanwhile, the tenets of the theory will be confirmed by experimenting them with the Qur’anic metaphors to show how they are a most effective tool for conducting such an analysis.

Abstract

Is there such a thing called ‘cinematographic metaphor’? And what are the differences between metaphor in film and in verbal language? What might be the heuristic value of the concept of cinematographic metaphor? The present study deals with these questions and tries to trace the history of this metaphorical concept from Eisenstein to Metz and recent works of synthesis. The – often rather broad and varying – definitions of the cinematographic metaphor are confronted with sceptical positions beginning with Arnheim’s early writings. In a final section, a delimitation of the concept is attempted which highlights the specificity of the concept of cinematographic metaphor. An extreme case of imagery is identified as a binary process of assimilation and conterdetermination of given contiguous and ‘metonymic’ signs.
